4 Caribbean Vacation Travel Tips
Planning a Trip to the Caribbean? Don’t Leave Before you Read These Tips!
We’ve compiled a list of 4 Caribbean vacation travel tips that will ensure you and your family have a thoroughly enjoyable trip to your Caribbean destination.
Tip #1: Bargaining for the Best Deal
Quite often, the vendors in the Caribbean will negotiate with you when they are selling their wares. If you’re looking for a souvenir hammock, you’re likely to find 30 merchants all within walking distance in any major tourist destination. Each of them are competing against each other, so they will be willing to drop their price to levels that seem ridiculous.
If your negotiation skills aren’t quite where they should be, the easiest thing to remember is to simply walk away. If they think they’ve lost the sale, many vendors will run after you and chase you down, dropping their price every few steps.
However, the most important thing to remember is that this is these people’s livelihoods! At times, they’ll be willing to lose money on a product just to have enough money to take the bus home that evening. Don’t be completely cruel, but know that you almost always have wiggle room on the “final price”.
Tip #2: Keep Copies of your Credit Cards and Passports
The quickest way to ruin any vacation is to lose your purse or wallet. If your personal identification or credit cards are stolen, you need to cancel them immediately and contact your nearest embassy.
Before you leave, however, make copies of all of your cards, and write down the contact numbers for each of your cards so that you know who to call. Keep these copies in your luggage in your hotel room (preferably in a safe). As long as you contact your bank(s) within a reasonable amount of time, they usually will reverse any charges that may have been incurred fraudulently.
Tip #3: Talk to the Locals
It’s pretty common for travel agencies to recommend places you can go while you’re staying in a particular town. What’s also common, is that these agencies make money on the back-end if you visit these places. This is particularly common with cruise ships. They will tell you that “taking the local taxis can be dangerous”, when it fact, they really just want to sell you on using the taxis or buses that they provide (sometimes covertly).
Don’t be afraid to ask the local residents for recommendations on where to visit, and what the best and safest mode of transportation to get there is. As always, use good judgment before taking anyone up on offers. Safety should still be your #1 concern in the caribbean.
Tip #4: Branch Out and Try New Foods
It’s so common in your day-to-day life to get stuck in a rut of eating the same meals over and over again. On your Caribbean vacation, you have to try out as many different foods as you possibly can. My personal favorite in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico is the “Yucatan Style Chicken”. To this day, I can’t tell you what spices they used, but it’s still by far the best chicken I’ve ever had.
And a Bonus: Have Fun!
Neglecting to have fun on your trip will be disastrous! When you get back home, and people ask, “What did you do on your trip?”, you want to make sure you have a great answer that leads into an hour-long story.
I hope you’ve enjoyed these Caribbean vacation travel tips!
